Xoʻjayli — Aral region.
Population — 67 800 people. Water to the Greater (Southern) Aral is carried by the Amu Darya — the inflow has dropped sharply, and the southern part of the sea keeps drying up. North-easterly and northerly winds carry salt and dust off the exposed seabed (Aralkum) to the south-west — toward the Amu Darya delta and the Ustyurt Plateau.
Xoʻjayli lies in the zone of the drying Greater (Southern) Aral: the wind carries salt dust off the exposed seabed (Aralkum). The Amu Darya, which feeds this sea, is heavily diverted for irrigation in the upper basin.
